The Hermanus History Group, which was tasked by the Heritage Committee in 2009 to create a history timeline for Hermanus, will soon unveil its display on the Hermanuspietersfontein plain.
The group comprises a number of people interested in the town’s past, including local historians. Now, however, it’s time to create a formally constituted historical society covering the Greater Hermanus area. Some of the key aims of the future society are:
To bring the history of Hermanus alive to residents and visitors;
To generate awareness around the study of history among the people in the Hermanus area and those whose ancestors lived in this area;
To encourage the collection and preservation of historical resources;
To provide a forum for sharing historical information through exhibitions, the preservation of historical sites, talks by invited guests, outings to useful family historical sites, and historical information collected by or involving members themselves;
To assist in the identification and preservation of historical documents of interest, and enable easier access to these documents for everyone; and
To work in conjunction with the Heritage and Aesthetics Committee and the Harbour Museum.
Dr Robin Lee, Angela Heslop and Esje du Toit invite you to comment on the proposal to create this formal society. Depending on feedback and interest, an introductory meeting will be scheduled towards the end of the month.
